Carbondale is a small town known for offering big city entertainment. There is a wide selection of theaters, performance destinations, and unique venues just around the corner fromThe Pointe at SIU. Whether you enjoy watching comedy or attending concerts, check out the three best Carbondale performance halls.
McLeod Summer Playhouse
The McLeod Summer Playhouse at Southern Illinois University is dedicated to presenting popular professional theater. It has welcomed visitors since the early 1970s. The productions have gained a loyal community and regional following over the years, and the actors perform in front of large audiences every summer.
Start off your summer theater season by singing along to Abba songs during Mamma Mia, which takes to the stage on July 15th. Also, don’t miss Once Upon a Mattress, the musical retelling of Princess and the Pea. It runs from July 26th through the 29th.
Marion Kleinau Theatre
The Marion Kleinau Theatre is also found on the campus of Southern Illinois University. It’s an intimate venue with just over one hundred seats. Every season features performances ranging from original scripts to creative adaptations of literature. The Kleinau is one of the most prestigious spaces of its kind in the country. It draws in a diverse group of scholars and guest artists, so make sure you stop by once the season starts.
The Varsity Center
In 1982, an enthusiastic group of residents explored the possibility of establishing a community theater. That’s how The Stage Company was born, and it calls The Varsity Center home. The directors present a wide range of shows every year and have actors straight from the local community. If you would like to take to the stage, don’t miss auditioning for The Crucible in August.
Carbondale performance halls aren’t the only entertainment destinations in the area, so check out these art galleries if you want to explore local paintings and sculptures this summer.
