July is turning into August, but don’t let your summer wind down yet. The Carbondale area will be hosting several free summer events near The Pointe at SIU. Whether you are looking for a dance lesson or a night under the stars, fill up your weekends with these free educational events.
Contra Dancing: August 4
On August 4th and September 1st, check out Contra Dancing at the Longbranch Cafe and Bakery. This event is free and open to the public. You do not need any experience to attend. Bring a friend for a fun afternoon of dancing. The Longbranch Cafe hosts several other events such as a literary salon, a farm to table dinner special, and a farmers market. Public Astronomy Observation: August 19
The SIU Carbondale Physics Department, along with the Astronomical Association of Southern Illinois, will be hosting Public Astronomy Observations every third Sunday of the month from August through December. The first viewing will be from 8:15 pm to 9:45 pm on August 19th at SIU on the Neckers Observation Deck. You will be able to see Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and M57 from their provided telescopes. See how the starry landscape changes from summer to winter.
Solar Fest: August 25
Solar Fest is an all-day event from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Southern Illinois University campus. This event is free and open to the public, and it requires no experience or equipment.
