Rediscover Nature: Parks of The Carbondale Park District

After a long, cold winter, spring will be welcomed with open arms. Our residents will be especially excited when spring rolls around because it will bring the opportunity to enjoy outside activities. Luckily for nature enthusiasts, the Carbondale Park District maintains seven beautiful parks. Let’s take a look at the best spots to welcome spring!

Parks of the Carbondale Park District

Marberry Arboretum

The Marberry Arboretum offers more than 25 acres of pristine nature. It is home to more than 20,000 plants, consisting of 100 genera and 600 species! You’ll also find walking and hiking paths, lush forests, picnic tables, and a pond that allows fishing. Named after William M. Marberry, a part-time Botany professor at Southern Illinois University, Marberry Arboretum sits on a parcel of land that he once planted with hundreds of conifer seeds. Mr. Marberry would be pleased to know that “The Farm,” has withstood offers of development and continues to provide a retreat for nature lovers.

Hickory Ridge Golf Course

Hickory Ridge is a public 18-hole green that promises to challenge golfers of all skill levels. The course is complete with long fairways, arduous sand and water hazards, and smooth greens. The Hickory Ridge Clubhouse houses the Pro-Shop andThe Clubhouse Restaurant. The restaurant at Hickory Ridge is the perfect place to refuel after a day on the green. Choose from burgers, cold sandwiches, hot sandwiches, or chicken. The Pro-Shop provides its patrons with a wide variety of top-quality accessories, equipment, and clothing. You can join the park’s e-mail club to keep up with events, news, and other course-related information.
